The Murder of Trayvon Martin
On February 26, while walking home with a bag of skittles candy, Ice-T and talking on his cell phone to his girlfriend, 17 year old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman, spotted the young black teen and called 911 because he looked suspicious. But despite the advice given by 911 to Zimmerman to stay in his car and not do anything, Zimmerman took the law into his own hands and pursued, chased, confronted and killed an unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in cold blood. To this date, 29 days later there is a nationwide fury over race and justice because no arrest has been made. George Zimmerman is free because he claimed that he acted in self-defense under a law that is known in Florida and several other states as “Stand Your Ground” which gives individuals the right to use deadly force when threaten by violence. The Stand Your Ground Law is signed law in 23 states, this law is an expansion of the Castle Doctrine which allows citizens to defend their home and possessions with deadly force if they were threaten by deadly force. The recent expansions of this law "Stand Your Ground" "Make My Day" has given a license to kill to people who are unstable, paranoid and who take the law into their own hands.
In another case, I am equally sad to mention that 22 year old Rekia Boyd was fatally shot down by a off duty Chicago detective who saw a man walking and talking on his cell phone and thought he had a gun to attack him. The officer fired 5 shots, one of them hitting the man in his hand as he blocked it with his cell phone and the other hitting Rekia Boyd who later passed away at the hospital. Yet two more innocent citizens victims of the so called Stand Your Ground law!!
